Where can I get one of these?

This is the armory room right outside the shooting range. This is where the officers will be cleaning their guns. The vacuum is for all the gun powder and other residue. How handy would a vac like this be in the kitchen?!

The Shooting Range

Believe it or not, there is a shooting range on the top floor of the new Port Police Building. It is equipped with both a live ammunition and simulated training system that responds to the actions of the training officer. They gave us a demonstration of the virtual training system but they couldn’t shoot anyone because we had kids in the group (not that I’m blood thirsty or anything, I just wanted to see the full range of the demonstration).

These handsome fellas are the targets for the live ammunition. If you’re worried about the noise and other pollution that comes with shooting off real bullets, rest your mind- they’ve got it covered.

The walls are covered, from floor to ceiling, with this material that sound proofs the room. The room is also extremely air conditioned and all the dust from the guns is filtered out through a special duct, so it won’t affect the rest of the building or the outside environment. How considerate!

Crime Scene

How many times have you thought that the door to your office should (or would) be taped off with police tape? I couldn’t help myself with this picture. These are the upstairs offices right outside the Chief’s office.

This is the roll call/ briefing room.

Middle Space

I wish I could have had a little more time in this area, but I was already the lagging member of the group. It really is nice in here. I missed the opportunity to take a picture of the kitchen that was made to look like it was housed inside a shipping container.

Good one, Janice

The building’s not even open yet and we already have to make some changes. I’m kidding. I’m referring to the fact that Janice Hahn is in the Council Person spot when we all know that she is now Congresswoman Hahn. I’m happy for her, but I just wanted to make a little joke. I know the race for her seat is going to be an exciting one and I can’t wait for it to start.

The Port Police Seal

The Port Police Building isn’t 100% ready, I don’t think the officers will be moving in right away, but they wanted to have the ribbon cutting ceremony to coincide with the centennial anniversary of the Port Police on July 23rd. This sign gave us the visual of the Port Police seal that will be inlaid in the circle on the floor of the front lobby. They also gave us a little version of the seal to take home with us, in the form of a uniform button.

Officer Creech said that the Los Angeles Port Police is one of the few agencies in the country to have their own seal on their uniform buttons.

The Front Lobby

You definitely got hit with that “New Building Smell” as you walked in through a side stairwell. The building is light, airy and industrial-modern in style. Our first stop was the front lobby, it was full of really cool elements that I’m sure a real photographer could have some fun with.

A tour? Don’t mind if I do.

If you’re ever offered the chance to go inside of a building you wouldn’t normally have a reason to (a legal offer of course), I highly suggest you take it. The Port Police officers lead tours through the top 3 floors of the brand new Police Station, there is a 4th subterranean floor we didn’t see. This was not my tour guide, my group was actually lead by officer Stacey Creech, the Community Resource Officer who I’ve seen many times before at Central SP Neighborhood Council meetings.

Port Police Building Open House

While I would like to say that covering an aircraft carrier was my first official assignment under the new ‘Block by Block’, it wasn’t. I happened to be driving down Harbor Blvd Saturday morning and I saw all the signs pointing me to the ceremony. I was driving around taking pictures for my tour brochure (thousands of spbxb pics and not one is useable) and I thought, why not!

Welcome from LAFD

I was hoping that Fireboat 2 would escort the ship into the harbor with all of it’s monitors shooting water out.I think it would’ve soaked everyone involved, from sailor to the shore.

Here is a picture of Fireboats 1 & 2 together.
